Learn About People in the Government
This short video uses simple animation and a talking elephant to introduce young learners to the concept of government. Words that are highlighted are: governor, president, prime minister, chief minister, and the mayor. (The origin of this video is India and in that country, the president's term is five years according to the video's narrator.)

Place Value - by StudyJams
Each digit in a number has a value.  That means that a digit's place determines its value.  Once you know the place values of numbers, reading any number will be a breeze.  Learn more about place value with this cartoon animation from StudyJams.  A short, self-checking quiz is also included with this link.

Learning outcomes

After studying this course, you should be able to:

• understand how the linear sequence of DNA within a gene is related to the linear sequence of amino acids of a protein

• understand how the information in DNA is carried via RNA to make a protein

• understand how RNA is synthesised from DNA by the process of transcription

• understand where the processes of transcription and translation occur within the cell.

Tools of Expression: Notation and Interaction for Design Computation
Design considers function, fabrication, and aesthetics collectively. Computation is beginning to affect the competitive dynamics of design. Using algorithms, designers are exploring forms that are essentially ?undrawable,? even with advanced modeling and direct manipulation techniques. Determining the appropriate functional characteristics may require the application of increasingly complex structural- and environmental-performance analysis techniques. To realize physically a design may require

1.3 The capacity of an MOS structure to store charge

Figure 1 shows a schematic section through an MOS structure and sets up a colour scheme that distinguishes the different layers. In this case the M-layer is provided by heavily doped polysilicon and the semiconductor base material is p-type silicon.

15.992 S-Lab: Laboratory for Sustainable Business (MIT)
How can we translate real-world challenges into future business opportunities? How can individuals, organizations, and society learn and undergo change at the pace needed to stave off worsening problems? Today, organizations of all kinds—traditional manufacturing firms, those that extract resources, a huge variety of new start-ups, services, non-profits, and governmental organizations of all types, among many others—are tackling these very questions. For some, the massive challenges

Representation and Delivery of City Models
City modelling has a considerable range of potential applications and because of this, as a field of research has attracted a great deal of attention over recent years. Here we reflect on work already reported by the authors in this area, describe some more recent work on improving the system that had been developed and show an example of how city modelling is being applied in practice as a planning tool in the UK.

Transport in the Low Carbon Age
Minerva lecture on 21 February given by Professor James Turner for the Minerva Series. Society has become used to the fact that personal transportation is really affordable. Over the past 130 years this situation has arisen with no stimulus from government because of the favourable economics that have evolved. However, the use of fossil fuels to power transportation rightly means that action has to be taken if we are to avoid climate change. The lecture discusses the scale of the challenge, som

5.1 Transmission of electrical signals on wires

In the discussions of newsgathering in the Taylor and Higgins papers, you saw the significance of the development of systems that allowed long-distance transmission of electronic signals. Initially transmission used metallic wires (remember Taylor's reference to the importance of the 'lines infrastructure' and his mention of the 'wire picture') and later wireless transmission (terrestrial and satellite microwave) became important. In this section I shall look at some aspects of the transmissi

Sheaf-like arrangement of lamellae in a blend of polyethylenes
A replica of a 3:1 blend of linear with lightly branched polyethylenes (BPE has 26 branched per 1000 backbone carbon atoms) after isothermal crystallisation at a temperature at which the LPE but not the BPE can crystallise. This sample crystallised from a phase separated melt. There are clearly two lamellar types (The isothermal crystallisation makes the distinction clearer). The thick, LPE rich, lamellae crystallised in sheaf-like groups, from LPE rich droplets contained in a BPE rich matrix.

1 Overview

Even in images taken with the most modern equipment on a large telescope, it can be difficult to pick out the galaxies now known as 'active' from the other more normal galaxies. But if your telescope were equipped to examine the spectra of the galaxies, then the active galaxies would stand out. Normal galaxies contain stars that are generally similar to those in our own Galaxy; and spiral galaxies have additional similarities to the Milky Way in their gas and dust content. Active galax

4 Who are the users?

This section reveals that ‘users’ can include a wide variety of people – not just the final purchasers or consumers of a product. The section also makes the case for strong user representation in the design process.

Of course, it is not only me who uses the various products in my home; other people use them as well, both members of the family and visitors. Sometimes the range of users of a product, and their different needs, can be diverse. And in addition to the obvious or intend
