Silvia Muller gives a plenary address, "Unpacking the Work of Teaching" at OIRT's Annual Technology and Learning Showcase on December 11, 2014. Students in higher education are increasingly presented with different choices about where and how they will engage in their education. Faculty too are confronted with more choices about how to go about the work of teaching and are making those choices in, oddly, an era which promises more freedoms but often ends in more restraints. In the midst of all

4.1 Introduction

As bacteria secrete such powerful chelators into the environment, iron in other organisms must be kept under very close control. Any free iron within an organism is likely to be chelated by a siderophore, which may lead to bacterial infection within the organism In this Section we shall examine the biochemical systems that handle iron within the human body. The two areas we shall study are iron transport and iron storage.

Just as significant was the fragmentation of industrial production whereby parts of the manufacturing process could be relocated over vast distances. Sewing in garment and footwear production, for instance, was among the

‘Bulky’ agents

So far we have only considered damage caused by ‘small’ groups such as methyl groups. There is, however, a class of so-called ‘bulky’ DNA-damaging agents that have been widely studied. Many polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) induce skin cancer in experimental systems and one such molecule benzo(a)pyrene, BaP), is found in tobacco smoke. BaP itself is an extremely stable and unreactive molecule, but it is metabolised within the cell to a highly reactive derivative that forms characteristi

4 Magnetic resonance imaging

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is one of the newest techniques available for imaging in hospitals. It is a tomographic technique (i.e. it takes ‘slices’ through the body) based on the phenomenon of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Technically it is a complex technique, but some understanding can be gained using qualitative arguments.

X-rays are not used, but instead the patient is placed in a ‘strong’ magnetic field (around 30 000 times as strong as the Earth's magnetic field
