3.4 The ‘flanker’ effect

A potential problem for the feature integration theory is the fact that the time taken to understand the meaning of a printed word can be influenced by other, nearby words. Of itself, this is not surprising, because it is well known that one word can prime (i.e. speed decisions to) another related word; the example nurse – doctor was given in Author(s): The Open University

3.3 Non-target effects

Treisman's feature integration theory has been very influential, but it does not appear to explain all experimental observations, and there have been alternative accounts of the feature-binding process. Duncan and Humphreys (1989) reported effects which do not fit too well within the basic Treisman account. 2.4.2 Duration and frequency

The second complication associated with identifying carers is related to how much caring they do and how often they do it. This aspect came to the fore when carers were first identified in the 1985 General Household Survey, an annual statistical survey carried out by the Office of Population, Censuses and Surveys in the UK (Green, 1988). From answers to a question in the survey which asked if respondents took on ‘extra responsibilities’ for someone who was ‘sick, handicapped or elderly

Election Basics: Crash Course Government and Politics
This video offers the viewer a broad overview of elections in the United States. So, as you may have noticed, there are a lot of people in the U.S, and holding individual issues up to a public vote doesn't seem particularly plausible. So, to deal with this complexity, we vote for people, not policies, that represent our best interests. But, as you'll see, this process was not thoroughly addressed in the Constitution, so there have been a number of amendments and laws at the state level implement

Will North Korea and Cuba Ever Be Wealthy?

After years of claiming to embrace revolutionary Marxism, the Cuban state is, for reasons of necessity and pragmatism, moving toward becoming a more traditional authoritarian state. Even once Raul and Fidel Castro are dead, it's rather unlikely that the Cuban government will suddenly turn to a political system that leans heavily in favor of relatively free markets. As has been the case with China, the ruling class of Cuba will find ways to perpetuate itself and maintain political control

Men and women can see each other through the divide, but we don't speak the same language or have the same cultural expectations. What's missing is a strategy for success to help women capitalise on opportunities at work, overcome challenges, and achieve a good life/work balance. Presenting their own experie

Management in Chinese cultures
What can we learn from the way business is done in Asian cultures? The dominant management philosophy in the Asia-Pacific region is a Chinese one, emphasising Confucian values, the family and respect for authority. Does the enduring success of this approach have important lessons for us in the West, or is this management style increasingly redundant, as economies and companies internationalise and mature? This album visits several companies in Asia to explore the relationship between value syste
