DNA topoisomerases

Topoisomerases create temporary strand breaks in DNA, thereby allowing the DNA to ‘swivel’ around the helical axis and releasing torsional strain within the area before resealing the break. With the cellular DNA in a supercoiled state, topoisomerases play a critical role in regulating both how tightly packed DNA is within the cell and the dynamic state of torsional energies during DNA processing. There are two classes of this enzyme: topoisomerase I (topo I) functions by breaking just one

1.4 Resourcing the project

Work will be delayed if the necessary materials and equipment are not readily available, or if the accommodation for the project has not been arranged. Although the project manager is responsible for overall resource allocation and utilisation, much of the work can be delegated. By conferring responsibility to achieve an outcome within the budget, more direct links between costs and outcomes are established. In most projects there will be organisational internal controls and statutory require

3.5 Issues of capability

Very occasionally, issues about the capability of the headteacher may arise during discussions about performance against agreed objectives.

If the appointed performance review governors suspect that the headteacher is not able to meet his/her objectives, they should first consider the circumstances of the school to satisfy themselves that these have not altered significantly to make the objective/s unachievable. If this is the case, they should make necessary allowances when monitoring

2.1.1 Prisms and the refraction of light

The simplest way to disperse light is to use a prism. When light enters a prism, it is no longer travelling in a vacuum, and its speed decreases. If the incident wavefront is travelling at an angle to the surface of the prism, which is easy to arrange because of its angled faces, then the propagation of the part of the wavefront in the prism is retarded, thus bending the wavefront and changing its direction of propagation through the prism (Author(s): The Open University

(Nickson and Siddons, 1997).

Risk management is fundamental to project management and has an impact on estimates of time and effort required for the project. It is concerned with assessing the kinds of risk associated with trying to make something happen, for example the possibil

Professor Mike Parker Pearson (UCL Archaeology) re-evaluates the timeline of Stonehenge's construction and sheds light on how it was used. The first Stonehenge began life as a cemetery with the original stone circle built 500 years before the version that we know today. Professor Parker Pearson and his team also discovered that the second stage of Stonehenge (the iconic sarsen stone circle) was built 200 years earlier than thought, about 2500 BCE.
