AlgTop9: Applications of Euler's formula and graphs
We use Euler's formula to show that there are at most 5 Platonic, or regular, solids. We discuss other types of polyhedra, including deltahedra (made of equilateral triangles) and Schafli's generalizations to higher dimensions. In particular in 4 dimensions there is the 120-cell, the 600-cell and the 24-cell. Finally we state a version of Euler's formula valid for planar graphs. This is the ninth lecture in this beginner's course on Algebraic Topology, given by Assoc Prof N J Wildberger at UNSW

Formation of Acetyl Co-enzyme A
This page explains the formation of Acetyl Co-enzyme A which is key to the synthesis of many organic molecules in cells. An acetyl group is a simple two-carbon-atom molecule which is sufficiently reactive to make it possible to use as a building block for larger carbon skeletons. A large number of molecules that are synthesised in cells are built from two-carbon acetyl groups. An acetyl group derives from ethanoate (acetate) and is named acetyl when it forms a group within a larger molecule. I

The Water Cycle - by StudyJams
The water cycle is the constant movement of water through the Earth and its atmosphere.  Water on the ground evaporates, becoming water vapor.  The vapor rises, becomes clouds, and then falls back to the Earth as rain, snow, sleet, or hail.  Learn more about the water cycle with this cartoon animation from StudyJams.  A short, self-checking quiz is also included with this link.

Unlearn Your MBA - David Heinemeier Hansson (37signals)
David Heineimeier Hansson, the creator of Ruby on Rails and partner at 37signals in Chicago, says that planning is guessing, and for a start-up, the focus must be on today and not on tomorrow. He argues that constraints--fiscal, temporal, or otherwise--drive innovation and effective problem-solving. The most important thing, Hansson believes, is to make a dent in the universe with your company.

Most fission products from nuclear reactors are solid at ordinary temperatures. They cluster around atomic mass numbers 90 and 140 (see, for example, Equation 2). From the point of view of waste disposal, the problem is that most of them are highly radioactive. The common radioactive isotopes produced in nuclea

Natural Inquirer Journals: Urban Forests
What are urban forests? Urban forests are the trees and other plants that grow where people live, go to school, work, and play. Even if you live in a rural community, the trees in your yard, around buildings, and in parks are called urban forests. Calling them urban forests helps you to see that they are different from the kind of forests that grow in large undeveloped areas. Urban forests include trees in community parks and other public land, along streets, in neighborhoods, around businesses

The Fruits of the Genome for Society - February 17, 2010
Lunch 'n Learn presentation: The sequence of the human genome, the primary goal of the Human Genome Project, was achieved just a few years ago. Because our genomes are a string of 3 billion sequences of four chemical letters in the DNA polymer, the ability to obtain genomic sequences depended on revolutionary progress not just in DNA chemistry but also on the equally revolutionary advances in speed, capacity and versatility of digital computers.
