Rainfall Accumulation from Hurricane Isabel (WMS)
Hurricane Isabel generated large amounts of rain over the Atlantic ocean as it approached East coast of the United States in September 2003. In fact, unlike many hurricanes, most of the Isabels rainfall did not occur over land; flooding on land was caused mainly by storm surge. This animation shows accumulation of rainfall from the hurricane--each frame shows the total amount of rain since the start of the measurement period. Rain from other sources has been masked out, so the hurricane track is

Introduction to the Global Catastrophes Risk Conference 2008
Nick Bostrom provides an introduction to the Global Catastrophic Risks Conference and briefly addressing some of the key themes running through it.
Pathways to Scale: From Prototyping to System Change
Explore the necessary conditions and models for taking innovative solutions to scale, with the ultimate objective of systemic change. Panel members will focus on sustainable transport systems and explore how this sector can serve as a model for scaling and engaging multiple stakeholders. Panel members will map their initiatives against a 5-stage model of innovation, from early prospecting, through prototyping and start-up enterprises, to networked solutions and, ultimately, system change.

Forgotten in the Mountains: Displacement in the Highlands of Papua
This film looks at the issue of forced displacement of indigenous Papuans in (West) Papua, Indonesia. This 30 minute film looks at the issue of forced displacement of indigenous Papuans in (West) Papua, Indonesia. Papuan fears for their future have recently become focused on the issue of migration from the rest of Indonesia into their homeland. Following the failure of special autonomy since 2001 to deliver health, education and infrastructure benefits to Papuan villagers, or even a small measur

2 Altering the environment Later in this unit we will be considering a number of ways in which humans alter their environment. In what ways do you think we are altering the environment? But is has also encouraged those countries in the EU who are not in the Euro-zone, or those not in the EU at all, to borrow in Euros as well. The point about the consolidation and integration of the Euro bond market discussed in Subsection 1.5, even though it is by no means comp 1.1 Managing the European economy after the introduction of the Euro In many ways the introduction of the Euro both begged the question of an integrated financial system for Europe (or the Euro-zone in the first instance) and was stimulated by its own success. This success can be measured in terms of a relatively low-inflation economy and, after a shaky start, the Euro's emergence as an international currency of some repute. Thus one of the first issues to deal with in this unit is the background to the institutional changes that Economic and Monetary Union (E 8.4 The organisation of the mitotic chromosome

A Biological Sciences 101 lecture given by Dr. Zamir Punja on March 23, 2006. This lecture describes the various ways that plants reproduce and the mechanisms to ensure success, as well as the various adaptations that plants have made in this context.
This booklet contains several activities that can be used by students to become more aware of how plants, animals, and humans interact within ecosystems, and how one influences the other. The activities can be used singly with other projects, but completion of all activities should give students an understanding of how ecosystems work and how all aspects of an ecosystem are interrelated.

This unit helps you understand the properties of nucleotides and how they contribute to secondary and tertiary structures of nucleic acids at the molecular level. You will learn about the different composition and roles of nucleic acids in the cell, their interactions with each other and the use of ribozymes, aptamers, antisense and hybridization as tools in molecular research. The unit covers the function of DNA packaging within the cell, the interactions between the DNA double helix and the nu
