Mabel Holmes' Diary, 1935-1939, part 1
Mabel Holmes, a longtime Topeka resident, kept a daily diary from January 1, 1935-December 31, 1939. During this time, storms resulting from the severe drought conditions blanketed the state in dust so thick that it could be pitch black in the middle of the day; Kansans were coping with an economic depression even worse than our current one; the threat of a second World War in Europe was looming. Against this backdrop, Mabel talks about the news, weather, shopping, outings with her sister, Elma

This paper discusses the creative imagination by the speech?s presence on the contemporary projects of art/design. Considering on the duality between verbal and visual, some post-modern artists/projectors are redeeming the germinal quality of image from the alphabet. They use video and electronic tec

Computational Specification of Building Requirements in theEarly Stages of Design
We have been exploring computational techniques to help building designers to specify design requirements during the early stages of design. In the past, little has been accomplished in this area either in terms of innovative computational technologies or the improvement of design performance. The prospect of improving design productivity and creating a seamless process between requirements specification and formal design are our primary motivations. This research has been conducted as partof a l

Time domain method for accurate non-destructive determination of concrete pavement thickness (A)
The material in this thesis focuses on the problem of accurately determining the thickness of a concrete pavement layer via non-destructive means. Existing methods are reviewed, and limitations governing their use outlined. An alternative method based on isolating P-waves reflected off the pavement base in the time-domain is proposed. Potential advantages over established methods are that prior knowledge of P-wave velocity and geometrical correction factors are not required. Furthermore the meth

Professor emeritus recalls the early days of PSU meteorology department
When a young Charles Hosler started out as a meteorology instructor at Penn State there wasn't much respect for the burgeoning science among the populace. Many saw it as educated "guesswork."
