Jefferson Is Elected President
This video is accompanied by text. "As the presidential election of 1800 drew near, political maneuvering grew increasingly aggressive. The election was the first to feature the Federalists and Republicans as two national political parties. Federalists endured the wrath of angry Americans who viewed the Federalists as power-hungry bureaucrats with anti-liberty agendas. The Alien and Sedition Acts, coupled with large tax increases--which required a small army of administers to enforce--cast a dar

Fraction to Decimal Lecture
Students learn to convert fractions to decimals. For example, to convert the fraction 7/10 to a decimal, first read the fraction as "7 tenths". Next, since the tenths place is one place to the right of the decimal point, 7 tenths can be written as the decimal 0.7. To convert 11/20 to a decimal, first find a fraction that is equivalent to 11/20 that has a denominator of 100, so multiply both the numerator and denominator by 5, to get 55/100. Next, read the fraction as "55 hundredths", which can b

5.1 The UK model of devolution

In its programme of devolution, the Labour government had to decide whether to adopt a symmetric decentralisation model, which would confer an equal degree of devolution to the UK's constituent nations, or to implement an asymmetric decentralisation model, which would grant differing degrees of autonomy to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. They opted for the second model in an attempt to respond to different claims about self-determination and to react to different degrees o

2 Identifying potential consultants

Once you have decided on the sort of consultancy needed, the first problem, mentioned by Clark (1995), is identifying potential consultants. I asked an associate with considerable experience in this how she went about identifying potential consultants. Her initial, and unhelpful, response was ‘you just know’. Tacit knowledge is clearly important here. Probing elicited the following:

Firstly my organisation was

1.3.1 Reactions to near-death experiences

A number of people have claimed that they have been at death’s door and can recall some of the sensations. Attempts to speak about near-death experiences (a term used to describe the extra-ordinary experiences some people have when close to death or when deeply unconscious) can meet with incomprehension, fear and hostility from friends as well as medical experts and researchers, many of whom refute the existence of near-death experiences. As Toates (1999, p. 1) says:

2.1.1 Should you stop reading to look words up?

It depends. Looking up words slows you down, and you may be able to make reasonable sense of their context without having to. For example, I found it fairly easy to guess the meaning of ‘habituation’ in paragraph 8, from the way it was discussed. However, I looked it up on the internet anyway, as I happened to have my computer on. I also looked up ‘real income’ and ‘marginal tax’ and found useful clarification of their meanings.

You have to decide how important a word seems
