Development of Computer Systems for Use in Architectural Education
Computers have not been used in education in a way that fosters intellectual development of alternate approaches to design. Sufficient theory exists to use computing devices to support other potentially fruitful approaches to design. A proposal is made for the development of a computer system for architectural education which is built upon a particular model for design, that of rational decision making. Within the framework provided by the model, a series of courseware development projects are p

Inside the International Criminal Court
What is the role of the International Criminal Court (ICC)? How will the ICC develop in the 21st century? The ICC was created in 2002 as a permanent tribunal to prosecute individuals for crimes against humanity, war crimes, genocide and crimes of aggression. This collection of five videos looks at the history and structure of the International Criminal Court and asks what the future holds for international justice and cooperation between states to bring criminals to account. 1.2.1 Death and Tolstoy

Inevitably, the way in which people deal with death, whether by denial or by the construction of a complex system of beliefs and myths, leads to questions about the meaning of life. For Julia Neuberger this is the lesson of death. ‘It is nothing to fear of itself, but it concentrates the mind powerfully in examining what it is we mean by life’ (Neuberger and White, 1991, p. 13).

TALAT Lecture 2404: Quality Considerations
This lecture provides understanding of underlying concepts and tools for handling experimental data and its comparison to existing design recommendations; it provides understanding of classification parameters for structural details and quantitative links between design principles and quality criteria; it enables sophisticated design for further structural details not included in current recommendations; it demonstrates methods of enhancing fatigue strength, especially as post-weld treatments. 6.1 Introduction

Although clearly related, the concepts of illness and disease are distinct. People have illness and physicians diagnose and treat disease. Disease is an objective term which implies a malfunctioning of the body or part of the body. Disease is pathological and is diagnosed on the basis of recognisable signs and symptoms. Illness is the subjective experience of pain, discomfort or disorder. Although it is mostly safe to say that illness is the subjective experience of disease, it is possible to

1.2.7 Margaret

Margaret was in her thirties when she learnt she had breast cancer. Some three years later, after the removal of the affected breast, she was leading a very busy life working full-time at the Open University, studying part-time for an OU degree and running a family. Fitness activities such as jogging and various sports had become very important in her life. She was also very involved in cancer research fundraising activities. She described the impact of her brush with death in this way:

3.1 Introduction to SNG and ENG microwave

Taylor's paper, From Newsreels To Real News, provided a historical overview of newsgathering up to the time the paper was written in 1995. It provides a good background but is out of date as I write this in 2005 (ten years is a very long time in the recent history of ICT). Taylor wrote an updating paper, Real News Meets IT. I shall be drawing on Real News Meets IT in later sections of this course. In this section, I have reproduced an extract from a book (Higgins, 2004) w

3.3 The downside of the new economy

During the US boom of the 1990s, some economists attributed the paradox of economic growth, rising productivity, but stable or only modestly rising wage costs, to the growing sense of insecurity in the labour force (Greenspan, 1998). Employment insecurity is also emphasised by sociologists such as Ulrich Beck (2000) and Richard Sennett (1998). This section outlines some of their arguments because they are central to those who take a critical view of the new economy. Their arguments also conta

5.4 A brief history of scientific revolutions

We now go on to look at the history and traditions of scientific discovery. As an early years practitioner, you will find this survey useful in helping you to challenge the prevailing perception of science as ‘absolute truth’.

What we call science was once regarded as ‘magic’, ‘alchemy’ or ‘conjuring’. Such knowledge was viewed as ‘black magic’ and feared as a satanic art (Woolley, 2002). In part this may have been because, in the Middle Ages, scientific ideas were e
