Biography

I graduated as a pharmacist from the Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium in 1998 and then pursued post-graduate studies under the co-supervision of Profs. Rita Vanbever and Véronique Préat. I gained my PhD in September 2003 and in 2004, I moved to London to work on a post-doctoral project directed by Dr.Ben Forbes (King's College London) and Dr.Nicola Clear (Pfizer R&D). In 2005, I was awarded a University of London Maplethorpe fellowship, which gave me, in addition to a valuable teaching experience, the opportunity to develop my own research area and supervise both undergraduate and postgraduate research students at King's. I was appointed to a lectureship in Drug Delivery at Nottingham in 2007.

My research interests have so far focussed on drug inhalation, of which I've explored different aspects, from the formulation and characterisation of dry powders for systemic delivery of therapeutic proteins to the development and validation of in vitro and ex vivo models of the lungs as tools to predict pulmonary drug absorption in vivo.

Current Research

My current research projects involve the use of respiratory epithelial cell cultures and an isolated and perfused rat lung system to evaluate the impact of transporters and lung pathological conditions on drug disposition from the lungs. Those in vitro and ex vivo models of the lungs are also used, for instance, to investigate the fate of inhaled materials in the lungs or highlight any toxic effect of formulations for inhalation.

Teaching

Drug inhalation on the B31C07 (Pharmaceutical Technology), B32D05 (Biopharmaceutics) and B33E01 (Advanced Drug Delivery) modules.
