Biography

I attained a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Biochemistry from the University of Aveiro, in Portugal by 2016. I then joined the CICECO - Aveiro Institute of Materials to conduct research (in a fellowship) and pursue my PhD focused on enhancing the pharmaceuticals' performance and delivery, until 2023. The research was centered around the topic "Deep eutectic solvent formulations for the development of drug delivery systems" and shown to improve the therapeutic action of antimicrobial agents by designing novel formulations. During this time, I participated in a project aimed at understanding how these formulations impact drug solubility at the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxford. In 2023, I undertook a short-term postdoctoral internship to design novel material-based systems. I joined the University of Nottingham in 2024 as a Research Fellow in the School of Pharmacy to conduct research on preserved human corneal tissue and on the development of delivery systems.

Expertise Summary

Extraction and purification of biomolecules using aqueous biphasic systems; Improvement of solubility, stability and therapeutic action of active pharmaceutical ingredients; Preparation and characterization of material-based systems; Antimicrobial testing and antibiotic efficacy; Preparation, sample analysis and manipulation of different biological matrices; High performance chromatography (pharmaceuticals' quantification and troubleshooting (C18 reverse phase columns)).

Current Research

My research is focused on the study of dry-preserved human tissue for transplantation and on the development of new and more effective strategies for therapeutic agents, which may ultimately stand out as more effective treatment options for a widespread number of biomedical applications.

Past Research

2017-2023: Development of new drug formulations, based on deep eutectic solvents (DES), that can simultaneously improve water-solubility, permeation and/or stability of existing drugs, particularly antimicrobial agents. These were designed and developed as new drug formulations containing DES, from simple aqueous solutions to biopolymer-based materials systems (semi-solid and solid dosage forms), for different therapeutic routes.

2011-2016: Concentration and purification of cancer biomarkers envisaging an early diagnosis using ionic liquid-based aqueous biphasic systems.
