Biology at the University of Nottingham
Brian Case
Members of the School have been saddened to hear of the death of our colleague Brian Case, who died on Tuesday 19th January. Brian was a popular and well-loved colleague, and a widely recognised and long-standing contributor to the University’s success. Brian had planned to retire at the end of January 2010, by which time his employment at the University would have reached a total of forty years. He fought a long and brave battle against illness, and will be greatly missed both in Biology and in many other parts of the University.

Welcome to the School of Biology at the University of Nottingham. The School of Biology is located on the main University Park campus, with some members of staff based in the adjacent Queen's Medical Centre. It is one of the leading Biology Schools in the UK, recognised for excellence in both teaching and research. Many of the staff are members of the Institute of Genetics, which acts as the research driver for members of the School and colleagues with allied research interests. More information about the Institute of Genetics is available here »
In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 90% of the School’s research was considered to be at the “Internationally Competitive” level or above, and 50% was judged to be in the “Internationally Excellent” and “World Leading” categories. For the University of Nottingham as a whole, the 2008 RAE was also very positive, with the University rising to rank 7th in the most widely quoted (Research Fortnight) league table of RAE outcomes for UK universities.
These are exciting times in many areas of Biology, and we offer a wide range of opportunities for studying the latest developments in the subject at different levels. Our undergraduate programme consists of 3 year BSc or 4 year MSci courses in five degree subjects: Biology, Biochemistry and Genetics, Genetics, Human Genetics and Zoology. Our success in guiding students' learning is reflected in our 'Excellent' rating in Teaching Quality Assessments and owes much to our ability to include the latest research in our teaching curriculum. Students coming to the School of Biology have the opportunity to study all aspects of modern biology from model organisms to humans, from molecules to cells, and from the perspective of the development, ecology and behaviour of whole organisms.
