Human Genetics is one of the fastest growing areas of biology. Modern molecular techniques and the building of genome databases are enabling rapid progress in human population and medical genetics and in the fields of development, ecology and evolution. Nottingham is a particularly good place to study human genetics because internationally renowned research staff active in all areas of human genetics and genetics are supplying cutting-edge, research-led teaching during the three/four-year courses. In addition to general genetics, the degree course offers a wide range of subject-specific material, including Medical Molecular Genetics, Human Variation, Cancer Genetics and Advanced Human Genetics. Your degree course also includes laboratory classes and an extended research project (year 3), based in one of the research laboratories, enabling you to develop technical and organisational skills, project management, team-working, and demonstrate the ability to understand, talk and write about complex scientific data and information. Furthermore, MSci students will undertake a substantial research project (year 4) where they will work alongside experts, receive one-to-one supervision and benefit from state-of-the-art facilities.
Other transferable skills highly regarded by employers include written and oral communication skills, numeracy, analytical and problem solving skills and IT skills.
Human Genetics graduates have a wide variety of career choices. Many of our graduates continue their exploration of human genetics through higher degrees, including graduate-entry training in medicine and research degrees at masters or PhD level. Other subject-specific opportunities include forensic sciences, patent law and posts in pharmaceutical companies, research and consultancy companies, government sponsored Research Councils and scientific journalism and publishing.
