Research Overview:

I study molecular evolution using computer-based analyses of gene and genome sequences. My work has been on the evolution of bacteria and viruses. Analyses of bacterial genomes provide insights into the mutational and selective forces shaping them; a particular focus is the evolution of patterns of biased usage of alternative synonymous codons. Analyses of viruses are aimed at understanding the origins of genetic diversity in different viral groups. My work has mostly been on the origins and evolution of AIDS viruses.
