SSTL has contracted SELEX Galileo to provide the atomic clocks for the navigation payloads of the first 14 Galileo satellites.

On 4 August, Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd announced that it had signed a contract with SELEX Galileo, a Finmeccanica Company, for the provision of passive hydrogen MASER (PHM) atomic clocks for Galileo.

The clocks will be provided under a contract of ~€30m.

The PHM is the most stable clock ever produced for space applications, with a frequency stability better than 10E-14 per day. Stability is better than 0,00000036 seconds in one year - equivalent to 1 second every 3 million years.

A PHM is currently demonstrating outstanding performance on board the Galileo GIOVE-B satellite.
