The HeForShe campaign promotes gender equality around the world. This fits within the Athena Swan agenda, supporting equality, diversity and inclusivity, for which the School is currently applying for a silver award.

The campaign was launched in September 2014 by the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and UN Women Goodwill Ambassador Emma Watson. HeForShe is a new effort to bring a global conversation on gender equality to people around the world.

The School of Health Sciences are proud to support the HeForShe campaign and have done so by a number of staff signing up for the campaign and raising awareness within the School.

The image shows the following staff members showing solidarity for the campaign by wearing T-shirts funded by the School: Jonathan Lamley (School Manager), Mike Slade (Professor), Michael Watson (Associate Professor) Patrick Callaghan (Head of School), Alan Williams (Assistant Professor) and Joseph Manning (Research Fellow).

Associate Professor Denis Walsh, from The School of Health Sciences and member of the Athena SWAN team said: “Gender discrimination is structural as well as enacted personally so there needs to be a structured way of addressing it. I joined the group because structurally addressing gender discrimination within an environment where the gender balance is predominantly female is more of a challenge”.
