The UK's Largest Learning Disability conference is back at the University

The twelfth annual Positive Choices conference, the largest Learning Disability conference in the UK, will be held at The University of Nottingham. The high profile two-day conference takes place from Thursday 3 March - Friday 1 April 2016.

The conference takes place thanks to the dedication of a small team of academics including our School Learning Disability Nursing lead, Helen Laverty. The team fundraise and persuade people to give their time and talents to ensure the event remains free to all delegates.

The first conference took place at The University of Nottingham in 2005 and attracted a crowd of 500. This year’s conference is expected to draw a crowd of 600 people.

Helen said: "Positive Choices is the biggest gathering of learning disability student nurses across the five nations - it celebrates the contributions that student nurses and people with a learning disability make to each other's lives. The conference also gives all delegates the chance be part of the majority for a change, and is a living example of true inclusive partnership.

Having been lucky enough to start the conference off in Nottingham 12 years ago and now bringing it back for a third time demonstrates the School’s commitment to getting it right for people with a learning disability and their families. For me the highlight is the passion! If I could bottle it and sell it we'd truly have an inclusive world".

Previous events have featured talented band Mixit and The Baked Bean Theatre Company. This year, the first day will culminate with a Strictly No Labels dance competition complete with a glitter ball and celebrity judge Anna Kennedy from the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing. The competition features people with a learning disability and their student nurse partners, and all pairs will compete to become the first ever champions! The second day will feature informative discussions from senior nurses and academics from across the UK.
