Why I give to Nottingham - Mark's story

Mark Bullock - 790x300

Volunteers are making a real difference here at the University.

From mentoring current students to delivering guest lectures, supporting our events programme to providing internships. Thank you to everyone who gives their time.

Our volunteers come from all walks of life and locations around the world. We spoke to one inspirational supporter, Mark Bullock (Economics, 1989), to find out why he gives to Nottingham.

"I was urged by my tutor to go ahead with a sabbatical year with the SU and, although I didn't know it at the time, it directly resulted in my career today as the International Tennis Federation's Wheelchair Tennis Manager. For that reason, I knew I wanted to invest my time in today's young students who are going through what I went through many years ago.

"I've always had a strong affinity with the University. Even while I was studying I was keen to give something back, but as an alumnus I'm even more aware now of the potential effect my advice could have in shaping someone else's future.

"Being an eMentor is an easy way to get involved, and it's fascinating. It's a two-way process – I believe I learn as much from my mentees as they learn from me. The conversations give me great insight about the way they view the world, and I've been able to talk to them about my passion for disability sport.

"I've been an eMentor for five years and I'm thrilled the programme is expanding. I'd like to keep in touch with the students I've mentored after they've finished the programme to see what they have gone on to do – and I'm always happy for them to get in touch if they need support in the future."
