Email

All staff, students, postgraduates and associates are entitled to a University email account.

About your email

Log in to your email

Official communications to staff and students are sent to University email accounts. The format of University email addresses is:

  • Undergraduate and Postgraduate Taught students: username@nottingham.ac.uk
  • Postgraduate Researchers and Staff: firstname.lastname@nottingham.ac.uk

Accessing your email

Log in to Outlook Web Access:

  1. Go to email.nottingham.ac.uk
  2. Enter your University username and password
 


Staff

Staff should primarily access their email account from a Windows-based computer using Microsoft Outlook but can also use Outlook Web Access via a web browser.  

To access items which have been archived, the Enterprise Vault Client Tools must also be installed. 


Connecting other devices

Should you wish to configure other devices (iPhone, iPad, Android, etc.) to connect to your email account, please use the following settings:

Apple iOS (for iPhone/iPad)

  • Account type: Exchange
  • Email address: username@exmail.nottingham.ac.uk
  • Server: outlook.office365.com
  • Domain: Leave blank
  • Username: username@ad.nottingham.ac.uk
 

Android (for tablets/mobiles)

  • Email address: username@exmail.nottingham.ac.uk
  • Account type: Microsoft Exchange
  • Server: outlook.office365.com
  • Domain\Username: Set the domain\username to:
    • username@ad.nottingham.ac.uk, or
    • \username@ad.nottingham.ac.uk

Some versions of Android will require the ‘\’ prefix while some do not. This should automatically appear if it is needed. If the ‘\’ is not prefilled, you should not need to add it.

 

BlackBerry

  • Account type: Microsoft Exchange (using Microsoft Outlook Web Access)
  • Email address: username@exmail.nottingham.ac.uk
  • Web Access URL: https://outlook.office365.com/owa/exmail.nottingham.ac.uk
  • Username: username@ad.nottingham.ac.uk
  • Mailbox name: username
 

Microsoft Outlook 2010, 2013 and 2016 (for PC)

Email address: username@exmail.nottingham.ac.uk

After typing in Name, Email Address and Password, you will be prompted with a Windows Security box, replace the email address with the username in the format listed below and enter your password.

You may need to click Use another account to change the username.

Username: username@ad.nottingham.ac.uk 

 

Microsoft Outlook 2011 and 2016 (for Mac)

  • Account type: Exchange
  • Email address: username@exmail.nottingham.ac.uk
  • Username: username@ad.nottingham.ac.uk
  • Ensure that the Configure automatically box is ticked
 

Mac Mail

  • Account type: Exchange
  • Email address: username@exmail.nottingham.ac.uk
  • Username: username@ad.nottingham.ac.uk
  • Server: outlook.office365.com
 

Thunderbird

  • Email address: username@exmail.nottingham.ac.uk

Incoming settings

  • Account type: IMAP
  • Server hostname: outlook.office365.com
  • Port: 993
  • SSL: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication: Normal password

Outgoing settings

  • Account type: SMTP
  • Server hostname: smtp.nottingham.ac.uk
  • Port: 587
  • SSL: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication: Normal password
  • Username incoming: username@ad.nottingham.ac.uk
  • Username outgoing: username
 

Windows phone

  • Account type: Exchange
  • Email address: username@exmail.nottingham.ac.uk
  • Domain: Leave blank
  • Username: username@ad.nottingham.ac.uk
 

Other mobile device (ActiveSync)

If you are using a device or operating system not listed above, although we cannot provide instructions with screenshots, the general settings you will be asked to provide through the mail set up process may be as follows:

  • Account type: Microsoft Exchange (ActiveSync)
  • Email address: username@exmail.nottingham.ac.uk
  • Server: outlook.office365.com
  • Domain: Leave blank
  • Username: username@ad.nottingham.ac.uk
 

Email security

As a large institution the University is targeted by malicious emails. If you are unsure about an email, please read our guidance on how to spot phishing emails.

The PureMessage email filtering service scans email entering the University network for spam, phishing and viruses before being delivered to your mailbox.

About PureMessage

Users sending University communications via email must use their University account. Personal email accounts must not be used for conducting University business or communications.
