Virtual desktop

Access to University-licensed software, protected websites and selected computing resources.

Who can use virtual desktop?

There are a number of virtual desktop services available, to be granted access, please contact the IT Service Desk.

Computer Science teaching staff, undergraduates and postgraduate taught students

Computer Science teaching staff, undergraduates and postgraduate taught students have access to the service known as Flexible Desktop:

Computer Science Flexible Desktop, Room A32

This desktop grants access to applications required by Computer Science undergraduates including Office 365, Java Development Kit, Microsoft Visual Studio etc.

Flexible Desktop also provides access to the personal University filestore (Z: drive) and access to printing.

All Computer Science students should be pre-registered to use the Flexible Desktop service. If you are a Computer Science student and don’t have access, please contact the IT Service Desk.

 
 

Staff and postgraduate researchers

There are two services available:

Staff Desktop with Office

This desktop has Microsoft Office, UoN Applications, email and access to the central file store (Shared - S, Research - R, Apps - X and Home drive - Z)

Staff Desktop with High Performance Computing (HPC) access

This desktop has Microsoft Office, SSH client, UoN Applications, email and access to the central file store (Shared - S, Research - R, Apps - X and Home drive - Z).

This is often used by people who require remote access to the HPC from any device.

 

Students

For Students, there are two desktops available, however there must be prior approval from the School/Department to use the service:

Student Desktop

This desktop grants access to UoN Applications and central file store. This can be used by students who do not have a copy of Office on their computer.

Student Desktop with Office

This desktop grants access to Microsoft Office, UoN Applications and central file store. This can be used by students who have a copy of Office installed on their local computer.

 

How to set up virtual desktop

To use one of the virtual desktops available, the Citrix Receiver client will need to be installed and configured on your personal device.

  • Citrix Receiver is available for Windows, Mac OSX, iOS, Android and Linux systems. If you do not have the software installed, you can download it via the Citrix website.
  • On mobile devices the Citrix Receiver app can be downloaded from the Apple App Store, Google Play and Microsoft Store.

Download the instructions on installing and configuring Citrix Receiver for your device on Workspace (log in required).

 

Using a University PC or laptop?

Check that you do not already have the software installed by:

  1. Click Start and type ‘Citrix Receiver’ in the Search field.
  2. If ‘Citrix Receiver’ is shown in the results, you can follow the instructions to configure your device.
