Current Research

Prof Drummond's main area of interest is in stroke rehabilitation. She is also directly involved in a number of trials and surveys within the Division of Rehabilitation and Ageing, several of which are described below in more detail.

"REFINE"- Reducing Falls in In-patient Elderly

  • Investigates whether the number of falls occurring within the hospital can be reduced by employing certain technologies.
  • Nurse is paged when patient moves from a sensor-fitted chair or bed.
  • Biggest study of its kind in the country; over 1,800 people recruited.
  • Read more about the REFINE study

----------

Pre-discharge Occupational Therapy Home Visits

  • Investigates qualification criteria for home visits during rehabilitation.
  • Home visits discover whether the patient's home is suitable for discharge.
  • Currently little congruity between who qualifies for this in different areas; trial aims to set up guidelines for which patients receive home visits.
  • Trial will discover whether expenditure of staff and finances are ultimately cost-effective.

----------

National Survey of Occupational Therapy Hip Precautions after Total Hip Replacement

  • Examines current practice after primary hip replacement. Often involves teaching patients "hip precautions", e.g. not bending new hip more than 90 degrees.
  • Opinions on the benefits divided; survey will discover whether precautions are needed through controlled trial, after surveying occupational therapists treating this client group.
  • Findings could prevent unnecessary expenditure; over 60,000 primary hip replacements are carried out annually in England alone.
