DRAFT GUIDELINE

SCOPE

The scope of a guideline defines the impact the guideline should have on the health of its target population (please review AIMS), which patients should be included and which patients should be excluded from using the guideline (i.e. the target population), and at which point the guideline starts and at which point it stops.

This guideline will be a problem-based guideline dealing with the presenting problem of altered conscious level in children, as opposed to a diagnosis-based guideline (which would have a start-point of a specific diagnosis - in the case of altered consciousness a diagnosis may take several steps to reach).

Guideline modules

The guideline will be developed in two parts or “modules”. The first module of the guideline will be limited to the management in the first hour or so after presenting to acute hospital services. The second module will start after the initial first line investigation results have been reviewed.
