AIMS

 

1.                   The guideline aims to standardise and improve the investigation and management of children presenting with an altered conscious level in the first hour after arriving in hospital.

 

 

2.                   The guideline aims to standardise and improve the investigation and management of children with an altered conscious level, the cause of which remains unknown after first line investigations have been reviewed.

 

 

 

Guideline modules

 

The guideline will be developed in two parts or “modules”. The first module of the guideline will be limited to the management in the first hour or so after presenting to acute hospital services. The second module will start after the initial first line investigation results have been reviewed.

 

 

 

Guideline users

 

Module 1

 

The intended users of this guideline module will be first line admitting staff in hospital (i.e. Accident and Emergency department senior house officers, registrars and nurses, or senior house officers, registrars and nurses admitting to an acute paediatric ward).

 

Module 2

 

The intended users for this guideline module will be more experienced paediatric staff, paediatric intensivists and metabolic medicine physicians.
