TitleThe Development and Validation of the Dementia Quality of Life Scale for Older Family Carers – DQoL-OC

Date and time: Thursday 9th November 2017, 11.30am – 12.30pm

Venue: Room A08, Institute of Mental Health, Triumph Road

Abstract: Older family carers of people with dementia represent an increasing, but overlooked population of family carers. Little is known about how caregiving affects their quality of life (QoL) and no dementia- and age-specific QoL scale is available for use with this population. This seminar will present findings of a mixed-methods’ PhD study aimed at developing and validating a unique dementia caregiving- and age-specific tool - the ‘Dementia Quality of Life Scale for Older Family Carers’ (DQoL-OC). This study had two sequential exploratory phases, which first aimed to explore how these individuals make sense of their own quality of life and to identify the factors that enhance or compromise their life quality. After that, a quantitative phase was aimed at measuring the psychometric properties of this unique measurement tool (e.g. content, face and construct validity, test re-test reliability, internal consistency). The DQoL-OC was shown to be a valid and reliable scale that can be useful for research and clinical practice to help improve the QoL of older family carers of people with dementia.

All welcome to attend!
