Current Research

New urban conditions emerging globally shaped by increasing urban population, rapid urbanization, the shortage of land and resources, and enhanced urban densification are contributing to a redefinition of working and living urban environments: a multiplicity of space typologies. In contemporary lifestyles, it is necessary to acknowledge and examine the new urban space typologies.

Vertical Public Realms, is called 'VPR' for short, can be considered as a means of supporting urban densification without compromising land area, solving the homogenization of public realm, and replenishing the loss of open space for social interaction. Additionally, as new public realm typologies, 'VPR' can turn into a new narrative strategy for urban spaces.

This research would define and reconstitute the concept of 'VPR' based on identifying and classifying a complex range of vertical public realm typologies, develop and integrate VPR Framework by analyzing the new attributes of 'VPR' and capturing intangible elements that shape the experiential quality of an urban environment, thus proposing new narrative strategies for 'VPR', such as 'Promenade VPR', 'Outside-in' and 'Vertical Townscape'.
