Biography

Professor in Stroke Medicine & Honorary Consultant Physician (Royal Derby Hospital)

My undergraduate medical years were at the University of Leicester (1996 - 2001) and I trained in Health Care for the Elderly and General Internal Medicine (Nottingham University Hospitals, CCT 2011) during which time I obtained a PhD in Stroke Medicine at the University of Nottingham.

Expertise Summary

My research interests embrace the hyperacute phase of stroke, assessing potential treatments such as remote ischaemic pre- per and post-conditioning; the role of cannabinoids in the vasculature and blood brain barrier; post-stroke dysphagia recovery; and blood pressure and stroke. I am the Chief Investigator for the RECAST trials and support various clinical studies through the Nottingham Stroke Trials Unit, currently including TICH-3 and PhEAST. I'm additionally interested in the impact of frailty on treatments used in stroke, running an East-Midlands based frailty cohort study FINE-ST. I am the NIHR CRN East Midlands Lead for Stroke.
