Health and Safety

What is Monitoring

Monitoring is a signficant part of an organisation's health and safety management system.

Monitoring is checking that health and safety standards are being suitably implemented and maintained in line with both external and internal requirements. It can be active monitoring in terms of proactive checks and reactive in terms of investigating and learning from incidents.

There are different levels of active monitoring in place at the University, from local Housekeeping checks to University-led audits.

Recording Active Monitoring

The University's Compass system (Health and Safety Online Records) is set up for:

  • all levels of monitoring to be recorded
  • actions to be set and tracked
  • obtaining management reports of monitoring data
