Biography

Dr. Chong is currently an Associate Professor and the Postgraduate Student Experience Director in the Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering at the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom. Prior to joining the University of Nottingham, he was the Programme Director for Mechanical Engineering at the University of Birmingham's Dubai campus in the United Arab Emirates and formerly a Principal Lecturer and Academic Lead for Aeronautical Engineering at the University of South Wales. Dr. Chong is a Chartered Engineer with the UK Engineering Council and has accrued over 20 years of HE teaching experience on a range of engineering subjects in 5 countries including the United Kingdom, Portugal, Malaysia, China, and the UAE. On the research front, Dr. Chong has over 20 years of involvement in primarily energy based research work including NOx reduction in primary glass melters, efficiency enhancement in steel reheating furnaces and anaerobic digestion for green methane production with the UK and European industries. He has worked on research projects with total values of over £2M, published more than 50 scientific papers including a book chapter, co-own a patent and successfully supervised 7 PhD graduates and 5 post-doctoral fellows. His research portfolio also includes the development of non-invasive technique using acoustic emission (AE) technology for the measurement of two-phase flow for pulverised coal distribution, structural health monitoring and non-destructive-evaluation of damage in high-strength composite plate using AE technology. Dr Chong was a British Chevening Scholar who completed both his Bachelor of Engineering and PhD studies in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Glamorgan, UK in 1993 and 1999 respectively. Based upon his PhD work, he was subsequently awarded with a Portuguese Doctorate equivalence from the Universidade da Beira Interior, Portugal in 2000.
