ABN Clinical Research Fellow,
Dr Chris Gilmartin is a ABN Clinical Research Fellow and Neurology Registrar at Queen's Medical Centre. He graduated from the University of Cambridge prior to undertaking initial medical training in London. He moved to Nottingham in 2022 as a NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow. During this fellowship he focused on translational neuroimaging. He is undertaking a PhD under the mentorship of Professor Nikos Evangelou and Professor Matt Brookes.

Since 2023, Dr Chris Gilmartin has supervised undergraduate and master's research projects at the University of Nottingham. This has included medicine, neuroscience, human physiology and psychology students. He is eager to support interested students - please reach out for a discussion.
Dr Chris Gilmartin is leading a study investigating whether a new neuroimaging technology that records brainwaves, and so how the brain is working (OPM-MEG), can identify markers for progression in multiple sclerosis (MS). This is important as it is currently very hard to predict who with MS will have a stable disease course, and who will have worsening disease. We hope this new technology will help us identify people at risk of progressive MS early on. This could then in the future support clinical trials for treatments for this phase of the disease. He is also supporting other studies using OPM-MEG, including research into Parkinson's disease. Dr Chris Gilmartin is also working on implementing MRI biomarkers for MS (the central vein sign and paramagnetic rim lesions) into routine NHS care. This includes interviewing stakeholders to understand what needs to be done to support clinical teams.
Dr Chris Gilmartin's research focuses on translational neurology - finding and addressing issues of concern to people with neurological disorders. This has included a range of research techniques including neuroimaging, large database statistical analysis, literature appraisal and co-production. His publications are listed below.
