We deliver a range of courses, as shown below, targeted at postgraduate researchers throughout the year.

We also offer an events programme for all students and there will be events relevant to you and your careers research.

Following your workshop I applied for a job promotion. I used the tips from the workshop to write my application form and prepare for the interview - I got the job!

Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding webinar - Tuesday 25 November, 2.30-4.30pm

Are you a current PhD student?  Want some help paying for it?

If the answer is 'yes', this webinar is perfect for you. As well as explaining the more 'usual' postgraduate funding options available, it's mainly about alternative grant-making bodies in Britain: principally charities, trusts, and foundations.

In 2024-25, UoN students or alumni won 61 awards to the value of £152,150. Since 2018, the value of awards won by UoN students or alumni is £1,005,263

  • A Career in Government Social Research for PGR and Research Staff

    Have you ever wondered what social researchers do in government? Wondered what a career as a Government Social Researcher has to offer? In this upcoming session, you will get the opportunity to hear the experiences of a current civil servant who works as a Government Social Researcher at HMRC.
  • Careers beyond academia for Science and Engineering PGRs – Alumni Panel event

    Finishes: 12 Feb 2026, 2:30 pm
    Come along to this webinar to hear 4 alumni PhD speakers from Science and Engineering who are working in careers outside of academia.They will elaborate on why they decided to pursue a career outside of academia and the highs and lows of their career journey. They will share their top tips to support PGRs applying and interviewing for careers outside of academia and talk about how to look for work in their sectors. The session will end with a Q&A for students.

Doctoral Training Programmes and faculty/school events

Our specialist careers advisers, deliver presentations and workshops at specific events as part of Doctoral Training Programmes, faculty, school or departmental training programmes.

These workshops include both Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and strengths workshops, as well as a range of tailored activities. Please email us to find out more.

Careers events for all students
