Your careers consultants are Kirstin Barnard and Lucie Whitfield. They are based at the Careers and Employability Service in the Portland Building.

  • A Career in Government Social Research for PGR and Research Staff

    Have you ever wondered what social researchers do in government? Wondered what a career as a Government Social Researcher has to offer? In this upcoming session, you will get the opportunity to hear the experiences of a current civil servant who works as a Government Social Researcher at HMRC.
  • Careers beyond academia for Science and Engineering PGRs/Research Staff – Alumni Panel event

    Finishes: 12 Feb 2026, 2:30 pm
    Come along to this webinar to hear 4 alumni PhD speakers from Science and Engineering who are working in careers outside of academia.They will elaborate on why they decided to pursue a career outside of academia and the highs and lows of their career journey. They will share their top tips to support PGRs applying and interviewing for careers outside of academia and talk about how to look for work in their sectors. The session will end with a Q&A for students.
 

Unlocking Career Confidence - autumn 2025

Are you looking to boost your career confidence and unlock your full potential? 

Our Research Staff: Unlocking Career Confidence Programme is designed specifically for you as research staff to support you in gaining the tools and confidence to do this.   

In this programme, we are running three workshops - two in person and one via a webinar.  Alongside the programme, you will have the opportunity to have an hour Strengths Coaching appointment where you will complete an online psychological questionnaire and one of our experienced advisers will spend time focusing on your strengths and how to use these in your future careers. 

When signing up for the programme we ask that you are attend all the sessions below:

  • Tuesday 11 November, 1.30-4pm ESLC (in-person) - Boosting career confidence and an introduction to networking and interviews
  • Tuesday 18 November 12-1 pm (webinar) - Developing your LinkedIn profile
  • Tuesday 2 December - 1.30-4pm ESLC (in-person) - Final workshop and future development 
  • Strengths Coaching appointments available to book either in-person or Teams for w/c 17 and 24 November.  

By participating in our Career Confidence Programme, you'll develop a stronger sense of self-assurance, enabling you to tackle challenges head-on and seize new opportunities.

Whether you're aiming for a promotion or looking to transition into a new role, our programme will provide you with the tools and confidence to achieve your goals.  

This programme is on a first-come, first-served basis and we have 20 spaces available; we will have a waiting list in case anyone may not be able to attend.
