Emily Hutchinson, Freelance Journalist and Sub Editor
What is your current role and what does it involve?
I currently work as a freelance journalist and sub-editor.
As a journalist, I work with Static Media, providing news stories and features related to lifestyle, fashion, entertainment and celebrity culture.
As a sub-editor, I work regularly for Digital Spy, one of the UK's leading entertainment websites. I look over other journalist's copy and make edits related to everything from typos to grammar issues, as well as organising the website homepage. I also source photos and videos related to the copy, select news stories to cover, and ensure everything is running smoothly for our contributing journalists as well as our readers.
Did you have any obstacles while studying and if yes, how did you overcome it?
The biggest obstacle I faced at the University of Nottingham was overcoming my own imposter syndrome. With the university's reputation, I sometimes wondered if I deserved my place on the course alongside so many talented individuals. But being open and honest with the other people on my course made me realise I wasn't the only one who felt that way. It also gave me the confidence boost I needed to realise I was deserving of a place, as was everyone around me.
How did your degree support your career ambitions?
My University of Nottingham degree gave me a better understanding of what really goes into every aspect of media production. It also put me in great standing to work for a website so focused on TV and film news, as my degree gave me a comprehensive understanding of the backstage side of the industry.
What knowledge or skills from your degree do you use in your current job?
By understanding how things work behind the scenes in the TV and film worlds, I'm more skilled in my work as a journalist and sub-editor to accurately report on stories related to the media industry. It also helped me as a sub-editor, as it got me used to working alongside others and putting accuracy above all else in my work.
