Entry requirements

This degree apprenticeship programme has been designed to support your recruitment into roles within your organisation and/or to up-skill your existing employees. For prospective apprentices without the traditional qualifications listed below, who have prior learning and skills developed from your workplace, please contact the University so that we can consider applicants on a case-by-case basis.

GCSEs: 6 in mathematics and 4 in English language (or equivalent)

A levels: AAB-BBB including B in chemistry (or equivalent). A pass is required in science practical tests, if assessed separately

Preceding level apprenticeships: We may also consider preceding level apprenticeships in occupation areas, the personal circumstances of prospective apprentices and their industrial experience on a case-by-case basis

Apprentices must be working in a job role that provides opportunities to learn the skills, knowledge and behaviours outlined in the Level 6 Laboratory Scientist Degree Apprenticeship Standard and must work a minimum of 50% of their time in England. The apprenticeship route is only available to UK/EU/EEA nationals or apprentices who have lived and have had a right to work in the UK for three years or more.

Full course details

This apprenticeship programme includes a BSc (Hons) Chemistry with Industry degree plus a Level 6 apprenticeship certification.

The 5.5-year course (including the End Point Assessment (EPA)) has been designed to provide a high-level, challenging and rewarding education and experience for the chemistry leaders of the future.

The apprentice will undertake a minimum of 20% off-the-job learning, delivered via a blended approach made up of e-learning plus up to five weeks of face-to-face block release at the University per year.

These block release sessions will include comprehensive lab skills courses, formal assessments, tutorials, seminars and problem-solving workshops to consolidate the material delivered through digital platforms. 

The apprenticeship route explained 

Individual needs assessment

As part of the application and enrolment process, we will carry out an individual needs assessment. This will enable us to determine their existing levels of skill and knowledge, and build a personal plan which will set out all the learning, tutorial support, and resources provided by the University. 

 
Tripartite reviews

There will be termly tripartite reviews between the employer, apprentice and the University to formally assess progress in the academic programme and work-based learning.  

 
Assessment

Apprentices are assessed through a mixture of exams and continuous assessment (for example practical work, coursework, and research projects). 

 
Support team

Each of our degree apprenticeship programmes are designed to include full support for the apprentice and the sponsoring employer. We provide:

  • an account manager to look after the employer relationship
  • a degree apprenticeship officer to support each apprentice throughout the end-to-end programme
  • an assigned academic tutor for the apprentice
  • workplace visits during the apprenticeship

Gateway Review and End Point Assessment (EPA)

Year six

Non-integrated end-point assessment (up to six months)

On achieving the BSc degree (or passing all the relevant assessments for the degree), the employer has to agree that the apprentice is ready to go through to the Gateway Review meeting between the employer, apprentice and the University – and can start the End Point Assessment (EPA). 

The EPA comprises of a workplace synoptic project, a primary journal article with presentation and questioning, and a vocational competence discussion (VCD). It must be completed within six months and will be conducted by an EPA organisation. The performance in the EPA will determine the apprentice’s grade – fail, pass or distinction. The apprentice must pass all EPA methods to successfully complete the apprenticeship.

 

Funding

The cost for the apprenticeship for 2020/21 entry is £27,000.

Apprentices do not pay programme fees.The programme fees are paid for by the employer and there are a number of funding options available. 

Are you eligible for funding?

Funding eligibility depends on the number of people you employ, your company’s annual payroll and the age of the apprentice.

If you have a wage bill above £3 million, you can use your Apprenticeship Levy contributions to cover the programme fees. If you do not have sufficient levy payments to cover the full cost of the programme fees, you may be eligible for 95% government funding to cover the shortfall.

If you have a wage bill under £3 million, you can still access our programmes for your employees. You may be eligible for 95% government co-investment.

If you employ a 16-18-year-old on an apprenticeship standard, you may be eligible to receive a further £1,000.

Incentive payment for hiring a new apprentice

As part of the government’s ‘Plan for Jobs’, to aid the UK’s economic recovery from COVID-19, there is a temporary incentive payment for those who hire an apprentice as a new employee. For new apprentices who oin your organisations between 1 April 2021 and 30 September 2021 you will receive:

  • £3,000 regardless of the apprentices age

You can apply for incentive payments for these apprentices from 1 June 2021 to 30 November 2021.

 To be eligible the apprentice must:

  • be a new employee to the business
  • have a contract of employment start date between 1 April 2020 and 30 Septemeber 2021 (inclusive)
  • not have been employed by the employer within the six months prior to the contract start date.

This payment is in addition to the £1,000 that you may be able to claim if you employ a 16-18-year-old apprentice.

Apprentice wages

As an employee, apprentices are entitled to a wage and paid time off to study. You will not have to pay Class 1 National Insurance for apprentices under the age of 25.

Careers and professional development

After successfully completing the degree apprenticeship programme, the apprentice will be able to apply their knowledge and scientific understanding to carry out technical and scientific activities in their specialist discipline such as:

  • Analytical chemist
  • Research and development scientist
  • Medicinal chemist
  • Process scientist

Once qualified, the apprentice can work in a wide range of organisations, including chemical, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, formulated products, consumer products, nuclear and analytical services.
