Insights from a Data Scientist Degree Apprentice Alumni
Hassan Mujtaba,
Specialist Data Scientist at Toyota.
I’ve had the incredible opportunity to journey from a Data Scientist Degree Apprentice to a Specialist Data Scientist at Toyota.
It all started with my interest in computing and technology. I explored various fields—software development, cyber security—but data science really captured my interest. I was drawn to how it bridges the gap between technology and business, allowing me to generate actionable insights that can truly impact an organisation.
Through the collaborative Data Scientist Degree Apprenticeship between the University of Nottingham and Toyota, my career took off, balancing my time on academic studies and immersed in practical business applications. This hands-on and commercial experience was invaluable.
I dove into projects like predicting customer car repurchase behaviours and segmenting customers for new car models, developing proof of concepts and testing plenty of hypotheses.
One noteworthy achievement was facilitating our transition to the Azure platform for data science initiatives, which not only enhanced our capabilities but also saved significant licensing fees. Participating in Toyota Hackathons in Europe and globally added another layer to my experience, letting me drive positive changes through data insights that improved customer experiences.
Throughout my Data Scientist Degree Apprenticeship, I developed a diverse skill set. I became proficient in tools like Python, PySpark, Azure; concepts like Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and even got into generative AI technologies. While technical skills were important, growing my soft skills—like communication and presentation—was equally transformative. They helped build my confidence in sharing complex insights effectively.
Of course, no journey is without its challenges. Early on, as one of the apprentices when the program began, I encountered some organisational issues with the course structure, but I took the initiative to provide constructive feedback, leading to positive changes. Managing a demanding workload also tested my limits, but I found it extremely fruitful to build crucial time management and prioritisation skills. I was lucky to have another apprentice working alongside me; we shared ideas and supported each other through our challenges, which made the experience all the more enriching.
Transitioning to my current role as a Specialist Data Scientist felt seamless. By the end of my apprenticeship, I was already tackling projects that specialists typically handle, which prepared me to face complex business challenges confidently.
Currently, I focus on operationalising and maintaining predictive models within Toyota’s dealership-facing app, the Customer Lifetime Value (CLV) portal. The customer repurchase models we've integrated are making a real impact by generating additional revenue for the business. I’ve recently collaborated with our Supply Chain department to optimise sales plans and enhance demand forecasting. I’m also leading initiatives in the generative AI space for Toyota in the UK, developing internal applications aimed at driving operational efficiency.
To anyone considering a degree apprenticeship in data science or a career in automotive, my advice is simple: be ready to commit fully. The apprenticeship is filled with opportunities; it’s up to you to seize them and pave your path to success. The standout for me about a degree apprenticeship vs a traditional degree was the opportunities I had to develop my business/commercial knowledge, alongside my academic skills. This helped boost my confidence and ensured I transitioned seamlessly into my first job after graduation.
As I look ahead, I’m excited about the potential to drive innovative solutions that leverage data science to tackle pressing business challenges. My journey so far has been rewarding, and I can’t wait to contribute to the ongoing advancements in the automotive industry through the power of data.
