Building the Student Portal at Nottingham

updated: Nov 2002

Why have a portal at Nottingham?

Introduction E-Learning Structured Data Services The University Website
School Intranets The changing web

A virtuous circle

Living in harmony with existing services

A virtuous circle

As the services available through the portal increase, the portal takes on some of the characteristics of a personal information manager. The student will perceive the benefit of the portal as not only a convenient set of links and web based data services, but an essential view onto their current status as a member of the Nottingham community. It will become a single authoritative source for bringing news to their attention. Compass will provide a thin layer in which current events of interest are notified, accompanied by the link to reach the full text or service. Thus Compass is complementary to all the existing websites, which the student might visit only occasionally, and should boost traffic in their direction.

Compass will not be compulsory: students will be voting with their mice. ISCRAS can be set up to display the portal as a default, but it is a challenge for Compass to ensure that students get into the habit of using the system. That challenge can only be met by ensuring that Compass provided engaging and valuable content of a dynamic nature.
