Description

Professor John Hughes from Chalmers University of Technology will be delivering a seminar hosted by Functional Programming on Wednesday 23 November

Abstract:
Some thirty years ago, I wrote a kind of manifesto for the burgeoning field of functional programming, which has become my most cited work, and is often read by newcomers to the subject. But of course, functional programming is much older than my paper, and has developed explosively in the decades since it was published. In this talk I'll take a deep dive into its history, exploring its origins and presenting a personal selection of highlights up to the present day. Although the story stretches over 70 years, I'll identify a few key ideas that recur again and again.

Refreshments and cakes will be served in the foyer outside the lecture theatre after the seminar.
