Beware of maintenance loan scams

Tuesday, 06 September 2022
Beware of communications advising your maintenance loan is ready.

The Student Loans Company is advising of a text message scam targeting students. The message advises that your maintenance loan is ready and includes a hyperlink. Once you click the link you are taken to a page asking you to update your bank details.

Please be aware of messages coming from an unknown number claiming to be the Student Loans Company. The Student Loans Company will never send a text message asking you to change your bank details via a hyperlink.

If you do receive this text message, do not click the hyperlink and delete the message.

You can check your Student Loans Company portal directly in a separate browser instead of following a link in a text message.

Here’s some more advice on avoiding scams:

  • Don’t give your phone number out to people you don’t know and be careful when joining WhatsApp groups - this is an easy way for people to get your telephone number
  • Beware of phone calls from numbers you don't recognise
  • Beware of unsolicited messages and adverts online, particularly on social media channels
  • Never give any personal details out - including bank details - to someone you don't know, whether over the phone, via email or in person
  • If you receive any messages or phone calls that you suspect to be fraudulent, report them to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or via the Action Fraud website

If you have been a victim of a scam, you can contact your Welfare Officer and/or the SU Advice Centre for guidance and support.
