EU Settlement Scheme [updated]

Friday, 11 December 2020
As the UK approaches the end of the transition period of the UK’s exit from the European Union, EU students are reminded to ensure your immigration status and rights are protected.

The UK will exit the EU on Thursday 31 December 2020. EU, EEA and Swiss students will need to ensure their rights are protected from Friday 1 January onwards.

Here’s what you need to know if...

You are currently in the UK

  • If you have already applied for or obtained settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, you do not need to take any further action at this time. In case of any future absences from the UK, please ensure you have understood the rules on this and how it could affect your continuous qualifying period. The UK Council for International Student Affairs has a useful summary.
  • If you have not already applied to the EU settlement scheme, you need to do this now. View our EU Settlement Scheme and Brexit information to help you start this process.

You are currently outside the UK

  • If you have already applied or obtained settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, please ensure you have understood the rules on absences from the UK and how they could affect your continuous qualifying period. The UK Council for International Student Affairs has a useful summary. Important note for those with pre-settled status: Although we have received verbal confirmation from the Home Office that absences from the UK due to Covid-19 are considered a valid reason for being absent from the UK, they have not published any written confirmation of this policy. Therefore, you may wish to consider returning to the UK before Thursday 31 December 2020 to re-establish residency here, if you intend to apply for settled status in the future.
  • If you have not yet applied to the EU Settlement Scheme:
    • If you have previously studied or been resident in the UK but have returned home during the pandemic and are continuing with your studies online (when you would otherwise be studying in the UK), you are able to apply for the EU Settlement Scheme from outside the UK as long as you can prove you are still continuously resident in the UK. This means that you must not have been absent from the UK for more than six months in any 12-month period, except for a single absence of no more than 12 months for an important reason (ie Covid-19). You will still be considered continuously resident in the UK for the purposes of this scheme. Contact immigration-support@nottingham.ac.uk if you need any further advice.
    • If you have not previously studied or been resident in the UK, you will need to either enter the UK to establish your residency here before Thursday 31 December 2020 or apply for entry clearance via the student visa route (for which you will need a CAS number from the University). Contact us at immigration-support@nottingham.ac.uk if you are in this situation so that we may guide you through the process.

It’s important that you make sure your contact details are up to date. This is a Home Office compliance requirement for all students, regardless of immigration status. Please take a moment to check the information we currently hold for you and update it if needed.

You can do this by logging in to MyNottingham with your University username and password. To edit your details, click on your name at the top of the screen and select ‘edit personal details’.

Please make sure you term-time address, telephone number, home address and emergency contact information are all accurate.
