Extenuating circumstances policy

Wednesday, 16 April 2025
The exam period is approaching and sometimes unforeseen events beyond your control, such as illness or injury, may affect your performance. Our extenuating circumstances (EC) policy is one of the options in place to support you.

Extenuating circumstances (ECs) are events that are unforeseen and out of your control, that may affect your performance in assessments or ability to submit your coursework on time. Some examples may include physical or mental illness, injury, family illness or bereavement.

If you are considering submitting an EC claim, we strongly recommend speaking to a member of your faculty Support and Wellbeing team before doing so. They will be able to offer you advice and guide you through the process while signposting to any wellbeing services you may find useful.

Claims must be submitted prior to, or within five working days of, your exam. However, please ensure that you familiarise yourself with the policy before making a claim.

If you have any further questions, you can find a comprehensive set of EC frequently asked questions on the Student Enquiry Centre.
