Face coverings policy

Wednesday, 29 July 2020
From Friday 24 July, the UK Government requires a face covering to be worn in all shops, supermarkets and on public transport. In consultation with the Covid-19 Expert Advisory Group, the University has made the decision to mandate the wearing of a face covering in all University buildings.

Social distancing and good hygiene practices remain the most effective controls, however increasing evidence shows that wide-spread use of face coverings can limit the spread of infection.

Please remember that you should not be entering University buildings without authorisation.

When to wear a face covering

Please note, these lists are not exhaustive.

You are expected to wear a face covering in all indoor University environments, including:

  • Shops
  • All University buildings and circulation spaces, including corridors
  • Lectures, seminars and tutorials
  • Teaching laboratories, workshops or practical classes
  • When working closely in small groups or sharing a single piece of equipment. In addition to face coverings, hand hygiene should be observed and surfaces should be cleaned after touching

There are a number of exceptions, including:

  • Specific medical conditions or exemptions, including hidden conditions such as anxiety
  • Outside
  • If instructed not to wear a face covering by a member of staff following a risk assessment
  • If working alone at a single workstation with 2m separation from others
  • When in a single occupancy setting
  • If a barrier, such as a screen, is in place between people who are less than 2m apart
  • When eating, including in catered halls
  • When conducting a sports activity, in line with Government legislation

The University will provide face coverings for use at key points for those who don’t have one, but it is expected that in the majority of cases students and staff will wish to purchase their own.

The University is also exploring the provision of transparent face visors to assist communication between those who lip read.

How to wear and remove a face covering:

  • Ensure you have a good fit
  • Avoid touching and adjusting the covering where possible
  • Wash reusable face coverings after every use
  • Put disposable coverings straight into a bin
  • Touch the mask as little as possible when removing and wash your hands immediately after
