Final-year student recognised in the 2020 Diana Award Roll of Honour

Wednesday, 08 July 2020
Final-year Computer Science student, Lee Taylor, has been recognised in the 2020 Diana Award Roll of Honour for his work to combat climate change and reduce food insecurity for Nottingham residents.

The Diana Award was established in 1999 by the British Government to continue Princess Diana’s legacy by establishing a formal way to recognise young people who were going above and beyond the expected in their local communities. The award recognises inspirational young people from across the UK and around the world who have demonstrated their ability to inspire and mobilise new generations to serve their communities and create long lasting change on a global scale. The purpose of the award is to foster, develop and inspire positive change in the lives of young people.

Lee has spent over 3,000 hours volunteering to develop Foodprint, a student-led social enterprise which redistributes in-date food to social eating projects, schools and foodbanks. Foodprint now redistributes over a tonne and a half of food weekly, feeding around 600 people each time.

Lee also helped set up Portland Zero - a zero-waste shop in Portland Building. Portland Zero was opened at the start of Sustainability Week in March 2020 and was part-funded by money raised through the University’s latte levy scheme run by WasteNott – the campaign to reduce single-use plastic across our UK campuses. The shop sells a wide range of produce from dried herbs and cereals, to grains, oats, pastas and even cleaning products. The products are all sold by weight which makes some cheaper than the pre-packaged supermarket equivalents.

Lee is now the volunteer Environmental and Social Justice Officer for the Students’ Union, running a Climate Emergency Campaign including student engagement workshops and contributing to the Union declaring a climate emergency.
