Free Speech and Academic Freedom Q&A event

Tuesday, 18 May 2021
Following the publication and consultation of the university’s draft statement on free speech and academic freedom, all students are invited to a virtual Q&A event to explore our freedom of speech principles.

As the government considers new legislation on campus free speech, universities are very much on the front line. The University of Nottingham has therefore commissioned a review of our approach to free speech under an expert working group, which includes representatives from both the university and the Students’ Union. The working group has produced a new draft university statement.

All students are invited to consider the statement on free speech and academic freedom and complete this short consultation from by Friday 28 May 2021.

In addition, all students are invited to a virtual Q&A with Registrar Dr Paul Greatrix and members of the working group. This will be an opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback on our freedom of speech principles.

Where? Microsoft Teams
When? Thursday 27 May, 5-6pm

Register your interest

When you do so, you’ll have the option to submit a question – even if you are unable to attend the event, you will still be able to ask a question using the link above. It will also be possible to ask questions during the event.

Please note that audience spaces are limited to 300 so we ask that you register only if you plan to attend.

The discussion will be framed around the current context for free speech on campus, proposed government legislation, and the drivers behind our new principles before opening the floor to questions. Your questions and comments will provide valuable feedback for the working group to consider as part of the consultation.
