At the University of Nottingham we value inclusivity and respect in all that we do. We remain committed to providing trans students and staff with a supportive, inclusive and respectful environment in which to study or work.
The recent UK Supreme Court ruling around the legal definition of a woman stated that – as per the Equality Act 2010 – ‘women’ and ‘sex’ refer to biological sex. The court also reiterated the responsibilities we carry towards people with protected characteristics under the Equality Act. This includes gender reassignment as a protected characteristic.
As an institution, we are currently seeking further guidance and clarity on the implications this ruling may have for our current policies and practices.
The UK government has also acknowledged that it is awaiting further guidance and a code of practice from the Equality and Human Rights Commission.
