Protecting your bike from theft

Friday, 06 February 2026
Follow these top tips to ensure the safety of your bike.

Biking is an affordable, healthy and sustainable way to get around campus and the city. However, because they’re often left outside or in busy spaces, bicycles can also be an easy target for thieves. Nottinghamshire Police have shared their top tips on how to keep your bike safe:

Double lock it – it's recommended that you use two locks, with at least one of them being a D-lock for maximum security.

Park securely – lock both the frame and wheels to a secure post, ideally in a well-lit area covered by CCTV.

Take removable parts with you – this includes wheels, seats, lights and baskets.

Register it – register your frame number (found underneath the bike between the pedals) on the national bike registration database. This will ensure that your bike can be traced back to you if it’s stolen.

In the unfortunate event that your bike is stolen, please report it to Nottinghamshire police as soon as possible by calling 101 or reporting online.

You will need to provide your frame number, bike registration number, a photo and any other details that could help them to identify it.
