Biography

Benjamin Youd is an RIBA Chartered Architect and Assistant Professor in Architectural Design. He has co-lead Year 1 Unit 5 for over five years following several years acting as a guest reviewer and having studied at the University of Nottingham.

Combining the practise and teaching of architecture, Ben has experience of leading projects across a diverse range of sectors and scales including domestic interventions, care homes, new-build BREEAM Excellent offices, listed buildings and net-zero operational carbon schools. Additionally, Ben has undertaken strategic roles within his practice such as helping to successfully implement an ISO 19650 BIM system gaining a tripartite BSI accreditation in all three of its roles.

Ben considers teaching and practise to hold a symbiotic relationship with each offering multiple benefits to the other. His teaching seeks to bridge the gap between the theoretical and technical aspects of architecture, combining narrative and environmental approaches to create poetic responses to contextual and functional situations. Ben has a particular interest in the power of the social aspects of studio education in facilitating the shared creation of knowledge amongst students, helping each to learn from each other and to develop a personal approach to architecture grounded in a broad collective understanding of the world around us.
