I have an MEng in Chemical Engineering from Imperial College. I did my PhD at the Industrial Research Institute of Swinburne University in Melbourne, Australia. I then worked in contaminated land consulting (predominantly remediation and site assessment) before returning to academia. I held postdoctoral research positions in Monash University and The University of Nottingham before joining the School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering of The University of Nottingham as an academic member of staff. I am an Associate Member of the IChemE. I teach Environmental Risk Assessment and Contaminated Land, and my research area is the sustainable processing of natural materials using microwaves.
I am a member of the Low Carbon Energy and Resources Technologies research group.
I teach Chemical and Phase Equilibria and Accelerated Design Training. I also supervise undergraduate and postgraduate design and research projects, and tutor and assist with undergraduate labs.

My vision is to tackle the global challenges of sustainable food production, reduced water usage, and the move to biobased chemicals through development of transformative microwave technologies to extract valuable biochemicals, such as pharmaceuticals and healthcare products, from biomass. My current research interests lie in overcoming the barriers to the microwave extraction of High Value Chemicals from Plants. I am interested in understanding how these materials interact with microwaves at a fundamental level, and using this knowledge to develop sustainable microwave extraction processes.
I am also interested in processing porous materials such as coal and clay, and how the selective heating of different phases within these materials can be used in sustainable processing.
I want to develop technologies that address the global challenges of water shortage and food waste through collaboration with academic and industry partners locally, nationally and internationally. I will focus on sustainable microwave processing of biomass in the food and industrial biotechnology sectors.
I welcome enquiries from potential PhD candidates from Home, EU and International countries who are interested in the following research areas: Production of bio-based chemicals, materials and functional food ingredients from food waste and sustainable biomass sources through development of transformative microwave technologies including Microwave-Assisted Extraction, pre-treatment and stabilisation.
