Sobia is contributing to the teaching of Mechanics, Computer Methods, Engineering Project and Professional, Experimental and Academic Competencies modules at the Department of Foundation Engineering and Physical Science.

She is also responsible for providing pastoral care and disability support to her students in the capacity of Disability Liaison Officer (DLO). In her role as Destination officer, she is also contributing towards the smooth transition of students into higher education.

Past Research

In her doctoral research, Sobia investigated improved advanced materials to enhance the fire rating of existing structures as well as the structures that have undergone the event of extreme temperatures such as fire. Her research methodology started with the exploration and identification of suitable mineral additives as well as fibres to develop cementitious composite followed by the development of the mix proportions with the help of trial mixes. After this, she fabricated structural columns by using the ultra high performance fibre-reinforced cementitious skin cladding with and without FRP materials and tested in the laboratory. Lastly, the regression models were developed with the help of experimental results to predict the behaviour of columns under elevated temperature.

In her MSc research, she investigated green concrete without (0%) cement. For the last few decades, there has been much debate in the research fraternity about the release of CO2 in the atmosphere due to the production of cement and then concrete that is deteriorating our environment by a global warming effect. One of the solutions to this problem is to reduce the cement content in concrete. She made a major contribution to this aim by developing a green concrete (geo-polymer concrete) without cement, and the same time utilising the waste materials that would otherwise go to the landfill. The developed concrete achieved up to 50 MPa cube strength in 28 days.

She has authored and co-authored 20 publications including Journal and conference papers, and a chapter of a book. She has won Best paper and presentation awards and earned silver and gold medals for her research excellence.
