What happens if you don't pay 2025/26
These fee regulations describe what will happen if you or your financial sponsor do not pay your fees.
1.1
If you or your financial sponsor do not pay your tuition fees, or any other tuition fee-related sums due to the university, one or more of the following academic sanctions will be applied:
- You will have your access to IT and Library facilities restricted which means you will not be able to access:
- your NottinghamHub portal.
- your University of Nottingham email account
- Moodle or Turnitin
- Microsoft 365 or other applications linked to your University of Nottingham IT username
- library resources
- University of Nottingham buildings which require a University Card to enter
- Your registration status will be suspended; during this suspension, you will not be entitled to any service from the university. You will not be permitted to attend any teaching/supervision sessions, take exams, or undertake any research relating to a research qualification. Your registration will only be reinstated when the outstanding tuition fees or other tuition fee-related sums are paid in full. and you will then be able to return to your studies at a time agreed by the university as suitable for your course. If you are in the UK on a student visa, you will have immigration sponsorship stopped as a result of any period of suspension for debt.
- You will not be allowed to graduate and/or receive your award; in order to graduate, all tuition fees and other tuition fee-related sums must have been paid in full at least three weeks prior to the start of the graduation event.
- You will not be allowed to continue as a student at the university if you cannot pay your outstanding tuition fees and/or tuition fee-related debt. This will mean that you will not be allowed to re-register for subsequent academic years while your debt remains outstanding and/or your student record will be permanently closed.
- You will not be eligible to receive the benefits of any fellowship, studentship, scholarship, bursary or prize awarded to you by the university.
- You will not be made any offer of a place on any alternative or future course of study at the university.
Tuition fee-related sums include:
- tuition fees
- reassessment/ exam resit fees
- fees for exams or re-assessments taking place outside the UK
- extension fees
- late submission fees
- resubmission fees
- charges for compulsory field trips
- late payment fee for tuition fees
- tuition fee payment plan administration charge
- thesis pending fees
- any other fees or charges related to your tuition, such as fees relating to periods spent in industry, studying abroad or on an intercampus exchange
1.2
If you do not pay your university accommodation fees or any other accommodation-related sums due to the university, one or more of the following sanctions may be applied:
- You may not be allocated university accommodation as a returning student
- You may be evicted from your room if you’re staying in university accommodation
- The university may pass unpaid charges or fees to a third-party debt collection agency
- The university may pass the unpaid charges or fees to a firm of solicitors
- The university may apply to the courts for a county court judgment (CCJ)
Accommodation-related sums include:
- accommodation charges
- accommodation storage charges
- discipline fines relating to your accommodation
- any other fees or charges relating to your university accommodation
1.3
If you do not pay any tuition or other non-tuition fee-related sums due to the university, one or more of the following non-academic sanctions may be applied:
- a late payment charge
- passing unpaid charges or fees to a third-party debt collection agency
- passing unpaid charges or fees to a firm of solicitors
- application to the courts for a county court judgment (CCJ)
Non-tuition fee related sums include:
- overpayment of a stipend
- overpayment of a bursary
- crisis loan
- cost of replacement of library books
- library fines
- discipline fines not related to your accommodation
any other non-tuition fees or charges relating to your time at the university
1.4
If you receive a sanction for debt under these regulations and you are dissatisfied with this, you can make a complaint in accordance with the Student Complaints Procedure.
1.5
The university reserves the right to take reasonable steps to recover all fees due and also, where applicable, any fees, charges or legal costs incurred in that recovery action.
1.6
If you are a returning international student seeking a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number from the university and you have previously failed to pay your tuition fees on time (that is, by the date given on your NottinghamHub portal), the university may ask you to pay a proportion of your next year’s tuition fees in advance before a CAS number is issued. If you are an international student requiring a CAS number and you have not paid overdue tuition fees and/or university accommodation fees, a CAS number will not be issued until such time as this debt is cleared. Graduate Visa reporting will not be completed where a student (or sponsor) has overdue tuition fees and/or university accommodation fees.
