What made you choose to study geography at the University?

I have always been fascinated by the world we live in and wanted to gain an academic and holistic understanding of our planet, its systems and societies impacts both positive and negative. I also like the way the subject is so relevant, to me geography and 'space' were lenses through which I could understand a multitude of things happening in around me, as well as their historical counterparts.

I love being outdoors and therefore studying physical geography, but knew I was more interested in studying human geography and the third year modules at Nottingham were really in tune with my personal interests: food, fashion and colonialism, so it seemed like the perfect fit.

Lastly, the fact the University had the most beautiful campus and is ranked highly for geography was a bonus.

What skills did you acquire during this time?

One of the keys skill learnt through my degree was project management and how to prioritise. This has proven key in my line of work, as balancing numerous events, stake holders and plans, which are all vital for the smooth running of events and in exceeding fundraising targets.

My writing abilities also improved significantly during my time at University due to the incredible support of my tutors (Lowri Jones and Stephen Legg) and professors, who spent time not just marking my essays, but teaching me how to enhance my written work.

What are your fondest memories from your time at the school?

I really enjoyed the field trip to Berlin in my third year, as part of our European Urban Geographies module. Working in the field on a topic of choice was really motivating and the fact we were given creative license on our project, meant that the work handed in was really personal and original. I remember the class forming a special bond together after our time abroad.

Where are you working now and what does the role involve?

I work as an Events Fundraiser for Hospice UK, the national charity for hospice care. I have a portfolio of both Challenge and Special Events that I manage throughout the year to bring in income for the charity through participation. The biggest of my events is our London Marathon team where I have over 200 runners.

My role when challenge fundraising is to recruit participants, ensure that they raise as much as possible through creating the best supporter journey as possible and organise event logistics on the day.

What advice would you give to someone considering following a similar career path?

I would recommend to start volunteering during your time at University, if possible in the particular sectors or specific charities you are interested in working in. Also taking on roles within Societies that show you are responsible and can demonstrate desirable and transferable skills.

There are now graduate schemes for those interested in the third (voluntary) sector: Charity Works, Worthwhile and GradUnique - so if you are interested take research and take advantage of them.
