Renowned freshwater biologist Martyn Kelly takes up an Honorary Professor appointment in the school

We are delighted to welcome Martyn Kelly into the school as an Honorary Professor. Martyn will contribute to teaching in the school, and we look forward to exploring new collaborative research opportunities.

Martyn has 30 years' experience in universities and, latterly, as a freelance environmental consultant specialising in the ecological impacts of nutrients in streams and rivers. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management with degrees from the Universities of London (1983: Environmental Science), Durham (1986: Botany) and Sunderland (2008: Fine Art).

He developed the Trophic Diatom Index for the Environment Agency, and then co-ordinated projects to develop diatom-based tools for assessing ecological status in lakes and rivers that are now used in both UK and Ireland as part of their national suites of ecological methods. He also has experience of running training courses in diatom identification and analysis, has contributed to diatom identification guides and is managing a UK and Ireland-wide quality assurance scheme.

Martyn has published over 90 papers in peer-reviewed journals and books, has taught undergraduates and postgraduates at the Universities of Durham, Bristol and Newcastle. He writes a blog on the aquatic world.
